Moving Pictures

When you look at an old photograph, do you ever begin to wonder how that picture came into being? Not just that someone took it with a camera – that much is a given. No, more the fact that, with cameras being what they were in the days of sepia, taking photos took a heck of a lot longer. The person in that photograph will have got dressed and in all likelihood gone to the studio of the photographer to have the picture taken, they will have had to sit still while the photograph was being taken – often for an unnaturally long time - and then waited some time for the picture to be developed and sent to them. The whole process could easily take weeks, especially if it involved sending that photo on to a family member who lived across the sea.

In the present day, there are good available for what amounts to a daily wage for many people that enable you to record a video of yourself and upload it to your computer, from where you can e-mail it to as many people as you want. You can host it on a website and count the visitors who take a look at it. You can post it on YouTube where people can leave comments and send responses. And all of this can take under an hour. If people are willing to do that for the sake of saying “hi” to a friend, they will be more than happy to do it to promote their business. That is the power of the Internet. It makes the unimaginable possible.

These people are living the life, and haven’t even had to lift a finger to get where they are. And while this may cause many of us to feel a deep sense of ...
